He's home! He's home!

Gabe's First Deployment Home

So after two and a half days (plus the other seven months) of waiting for him to come home, my brother is finally home safe from his first deployment to Iraq!

It was VERY exciting to experience a Marine homecoming like this, as Husband put it: "I feel like I'm standing in about 340 living rooms right now." Very emotional reunions surrounding you amidst the sea of camoflage colored uniforms.

God blessed our little trip very much, and we got bonus time spent with one cool cousin and one cool aunt.

Quilting 101

Jan's First Quilt Fabric

Yesterday was our first meeting of Quilting 101 at our home. I was very nervous because I've never taught anything sucessfully in terms of hobbies like this. Quilting is not like scrapbooking where anything goes usually and you can pick it up so quickly. Quilting is a little more difficult but well worth the effort you put into it.

We had a lovely time spending the day together and my two "students" left still extremely excited about making their own quilts. The above shows Jan's quilt fabric which I happen to LOVE, as evidenced by the fact that we share the same fabric for our backings. Both Jan and Julie did a beautiful job choosing all of their fabrics, giving careful thought to both the comfort and aesthetic of the future quilt.

I am very proud of the start we have all gotten and I'm very excited to see what happens next week!

Tuesday Tuesday....

First Quilt Back Detail

Today was a fun, productive day with some fabric shopping thrown in. Fabric shopping is tons of fun and I love it! We didn't buy anything yet but I have very high hopes come Friday. I am however, full of yummy dinner food and ready for some rest and quiet time with the big Man. He's doing some amazing things right now.

Here it is!

First Quilt Front

First Quilt Back

Here are pictures of my first homemade quilt! It's gorgeous and I like it more everyday! This type of quilt design and size is called a Log Cabin lap quilt. I was cold earlier and it kept me from freezing to death on the couch. VERY handy to have around the house!

Trying something new

pretty sunset

I'm learning how to upload pictures here so I can put a picture of my quilt here. Just enjoy the pretty (yet grainy) picture and have no worries!

News, news and more news!

After hand sewing for about 7 hours with a dinner break, I finished my first quilt yesterday! It's beautiful and fun and very cool- looking, and we're already "arguing" over who gets to use it when we snuggle on the couch to watch tv.

I'm stinkin' excited to get started on my next quilting project, which I'm still debating exactly what to do and how big it will be. I'm very excited about the quilting class I'll be pseudo-teaching though. I can't wait to begin that!

In big news, my brother who's been serving in Iraq for seven months is soon to be on his way home! I can't wait and I'm very excited!

Adult, schmadult...

When did I become a card- carrying member of the adult world? I remember the day I realized I was old enough to pass for an adult: I owned a car and paid bills and had a job (I was doing laundry at the time too.).

But lately it seems as though life has thought up new and surprising ways to show me that yes, indeed, I am a true blue, full- fledged adult. Real hard- core life issues and problems, medical issues, health histories, job losses, death, politics and relationships become what I talk about with friends and family members. I remember when we used to talk about school and boys and high school jobs and what our parents were doing to embarass us.

When did that crossover occur when all responsibility landed on my shoulders? I think somedays I would like to put on some overalls, eat a fudgesicle, play outside with my friends, and not think about the 'adult world' for a while.
